I do not condone nor promote the rising e-cigarette trend in Malaysia. I respect and value Ministry of Health aspiration to actualize a healthy nation, free from any substance dependence. However, I really can’t help myself to have some doubt with their eagerness to confiscate vape flavours containing nicotine. We know from years of research that cigarettes has way more profound evidence against it and we can certainly assume it is worth banning first. Realistically speaking, we will never be able to ban tobacco products because it has existed and used for ages. What can be done is aggressive and consistent efforts in educating the public against smoking. Australia for example, has proved to the world they are able to effectively reduce the smoking prevalence of smokers >18 years from 25% in 1991 to 13.3% in 2013 through persistent campaign and education.
My point here is, if the Ministry concerns so much on substance dependency, why not be overzealous with the war against drugs;meth, cannabis, heroin and the list goes on. We know and we have seen how this filthy substance is enslaving our people, to the extent where they no longer hesitate to kill their family and harm anyone around to fulfill their addiction cycle. From my personal encounter over the last 6 weeks of placement, I can roughly say 3 out 7 youths seen in the psychiatric clinic has co-morbid substance misuse. For God sake, I do not know how this illicit drugs manage to infiltrate our borders although we have set mandatory death penalty for drug traffickers. More salt to the wound, substance misuse is undoubtedly a conundrum for medical team in delivering effective treatments to psychiatric patients.
Bottom line: We have many enemies, prioritize. Let’s focus on combating the deadliest enemy first without disregarding newer dependence culture. This is our country, it is our responsibility. #HES #HSB #Holiday
